I am a server now but worked at a well known sandwich fast food chain for a long time. My location allowed tips, and during a normal shift I probably made $5-10 in tips, $10 being a really busy shift with a small staff. I think serving is much harder than fast food because it's more responsibility and requires more skill. One place the hosts make 6.50 plus tip out, there being a host means when you come in for your shift you could be put on either front door, busser, or expo/ food runner, all which all pretty demanding jobs, with expo/ food runner being the most demanding. At my other restaurant there is no tip out, hosts are paid 7.25, but you can earn raises. First the "the front of the house" (the people who the guests interact with) and the "back of the house" (cooks, dishwashers, prepcooks). As a server, you're mostly concerned about the "front of the house" positions and how they all work on tandem with your role to facilitate the dining experience.
