The Penn 309 used to be the standard for bay trolling. Most guys used 30 lb mono in spring / summer - then put on 30lb Monel for late fall / winter. It's a good reel for spring - I'd stick with lighter lures - up to say 10 ozs. Not sure it will handle big umbrellas.

The worm gear that the level wind guide travels on is often forgotten when lubing a reel. Trick is to turn it upside down and put 1-2 drips of lube before fishing. This way - reeling in/out lubes up the worm gear and pawl. The pawl is a very thin piece of metal that rides in the groove of the worm gear.
