The 1978 date is the date the the fat slide replaced the original slide. The original gun was made sometime between 1957 to 1959 based on the serial number.the value is smewhere around $450 to $500. The xed out stamp on the right side is a BMI stamp.Although the magazine release is a pain, the P1 does have excellent sights for a service pistol. These are large, rugged and easy to see. The front sight is a large square post with a white dot. The rear is a large square notch with a white post. Windage adjustments are made by simply drifting the rear sight.

My gun is a PPK/S, Blue and one side does say "Made in the USA". If the S/N information you gave me is correct the gun dates to before 1983, I think!
