On a few occassions with a fully charged battery the low battery charge indicator has appeared on my D700 and I have lost power. After reinserting the battery power is restored and everything is fine. It's happened about half a dozen times over the last few months.

What has changed are the focussing speeds and additional modes as well as the coverage of focussing points. The MH-18 and EN-EL3 only have two contacts, whereas the MH-18a and EN-EL3e have a third contact. IIRC this third contact is used to exchange data about the residual charge and why you get a percentage reading with the D200 and later cameras.
