Jun 19, 2019 · Help plz. 87 Mercury 150 xr2 Black Max. I just recently purchased a 87 hydra sport with 87 150 xr2 Black Max. Boat is real sluggish out the whole and will only run 5400 wot. It has a 23p prop. All cylinders have good compression. New stator was put on in March as I was told. Boat only runs 48mph and 5400 rpms. The motor is a older 87 mercury xr2 black max. I have a thrust washer, the prop, the nut and locking washer. I noticed after putting on the propeller and spinning it, there is a slight touching on one side every 360 degree. i think this is ok. but i was wondering if I had the thrust washer on properly and was looking at pictures of others.

Yes the XR2 would rev between 5500 to 6000 compared to 5000-5500 of the standard blackmax. It is slightly ported, 200hp exhaust and jetted carbs. I took it to my local boat mechanic who told me that the timing was advanced to make it idle at 2000rpm. Got it fixed to as best that they could at the time.Look at the engine as a big air pump. If is it not efficient it will show most at low speeds. Your engine has a idle stabilizer, a black box on the front top of the engine. Disconnect it and set the timing in the water where it will idle at about 750 rpm in gear. Which will equal about 1000 rpm in neutral.MODEL YEAR CHART.
