I know that structures in caves take 6x damage, but what actually counts as a cave is unclear to me. On the island the caves are obviously separate from the surface landscape. Small openings, tends to lag when you enter and the cave load, etc. I recently started playing on a rag server, and the bevy of surface caves is pretty amazing.
