People get stuck on using the ranged attack as a crutch, while the actual katana moveset is extremely versatile and is, in tandem with the ranged attack, the key to being really skilled with it. In other words, it's a low skill floor, high skill ceiling weapon.

If you get the timing right with the moonveil katana, you can counter most ashes of war with the vertical slash, it used to have a generous "parry" window which has been reduced in duration and most enemies stagger bars are to large to exploit anymore, however players still get wrecked if they have the check to try and spam skills in your face.
