Feb 27, 2014. #1. Hi fellows this is my first login to this forum. I have a 1988 mercury 150 xr4 black max that runs beautifully idling and full throttle out of water with water ears on lower foot. Will crank, time you hit the starter. Let it set for hour or two and overnight you will have to spray gas in carbs to get it to crank.
What you should have on the rectifier is 5 wires. 2 yellows, 2 reds, and a gray. (it is possible that you have 1 extra black wire, and if you do, it's a ground). The 2 yellows should go to the stator, the 2 reds tie together and go to the starter solenoid where the battery cable connects. And the gray is the tach wire.

The only 3 things that would do that is. 1. the stop circuit, which you ruled out by disconnecting the black/yellow wire. 2. the stator, which you will go test. 3 The switchboxes, which are not testable. When trying to figure out a no spark on all situation it is a process of elimination.
