However, either I'm doing something wrong or Essie is the worst quality polish I have ever used. It goes on thin and streaky, brushstrokes are visible no matter what I do, and it chips off within 24 hours. I've tried Essie top coat, my normal top coat, and no top coat. The results are terrible any way.

I try to do nail care once a week. That entails removing old polish, then removing hangnails, and dead skin. I’ll push back my cuticles before painting on a nail hardener and then I’ll paint a new color over it. After it’s all dry, I’ll use a cuticle oil then hand lotion. I’d say start by regularly moisturizing your hands.
