Jun 12, 2011 · Here's a nodule of horse Creek Chert that I slabbed. Liked the way it came out so much I decided to keep it like it is for the ol' type collection. As far as I know Horse Creek Chert is mainly found as float and nodules in the creeks of some areas of central to eastern Tennessee, but I have "heard" of a few lucky folks that have found veins to dig.

As for the damage on the right hand side it’s hard to say if that was an impact fracture or a manufacturing defect but the point you have is in the ‘nearly’ finished stage in my opinion. That’s a very nice material.

I have been hunting over the years around many quarries which some are close together.But what I find odd is the distribution of the quarries. They are localized. And when you find the other quarry lithics it's almost always an artifact. Chert and flint are microcrystalline varieties of quartz. Their quartz crystals are so tiny that chert and flint fracture more like glass than quartz crystals. A skilled person can chip chert and flint pieces into arrow heads, spear points, and other tools.
