Jan 25, 2022 · I personally believe the 716I is the best rifle you can buy for the money in the AR-308/AR-10 Battle Rifle category. I think the 716I can perform alongside its older sibling, the 716 G1 & G2 Piston guns probably to the surprise of many. The 716I may also be able to potentially shoot more accurately than the 716 due to it build type. The SIG 716I has rifle length gas and a full length AR-10 buffer tube. I rarely noticed recoil and never received shoulder bruising like I did after shooting my M1A SOCOM16 rapidly. I was looking for the 716i but the shop ran out of them. Some guy had sold the 716G2 to the shop right before I got there so he could get a SCAR17. Lucky for me the dealer cut me a deal and I got the 716G2 instead of the 716i. I probably would have enjoyed the 716i just as much, but this gave me a reason to try a short stroke piston rifle.
So similar applies to 7.62 and .308, just reversed. Generally a rifle is marked for its intended caliber but then you can use the slightly smaller counterpart on it. However, on the 16” vs 20” question, go 20” because the 16” with Mid-Length gas has been problematic. I had to switch the buffer spring to an M4 spring for it to be reliable on gas setting 2.
