This mod scales their size based on your resolution to be the closest match to how big they would be at 720p (which the moodles were originally designed for). Yeah each moodle has a different effect, but as the need for sleep increases your screen does get darker like you said. Really it just gives an overlay for when you're frozen/in pain/too hot etc., but that's pretty much the more dominant feature of the mod. ...
